Inclusive Leadership and Culture
As school leaders preparing to review and strengthen your school's inclusive culture, effective inclusion starts with you. The culture of a school is shaped by the values, behaviours, and priorities modelled by its leadership team. To create a genuinely inclusive environment, leaders must actively demonstrate a commitment to equity, belonging, and high expectations for all learners.
This includes setting a clear vision for inclusion, using inclusive language, making thoughtful decisions that consider the needs of the most vulnerable, and investing in professional development that equips staff with inclusive pedagogical skills. When leadership teams visibly prioritise inclusion, through their daily actions, communication with staff, students and families, and how they respond to challenge, they cultivate a culture where every member of the school community feels respected, safe and supported.
Reviewing your own practices and the messages you send, intentionally and unintentionally, is a powerful step toward building a school where all students, including those with SEND, neurodiversity, or facing disadvantage, are truly able to thrive.

This audit with questions and prompts can be used by senior leaders, SENCO's and teachers. It can be used by one or many practioners - more responses increases veracity.
