Environment

An inclusive and engaging environment can play a subtle but significant role in supporting all students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Research suggests that when students experience a sense of belonging and safety, they are more likely to engage positively with learning, build resilience, and work towards their potential (OECD, 2019; Allen et al., 2018). In today’s digital age, where young people are immersed in a stream of online information, schools can cultivate relevance by offering purposeful, real-world learning experiences that encourage attendance, and on providing a physical place of belonging that supports connection, collaboration, and community in ways that digital spaces cannot easily replicate.

An inclusive environment might address the physical setting (e.g., accessible sites, sensory-aware classrooms, equitable social spaces), the emotional climate (a culture of belonging, anti-bullying measures, trauma-informed relationships), and access to teaching and learning (adaptive approaches, clear communication, flexible pathways). It may also be supported by policies and processes that are fair, transparent, and developed in partnership with students and families, alongside well-managed transitions between year groups or settings. Engagement is not only about academic rigour but also about creating varied opportunities, including beyond the classroom, that connect to students’ identities, interests, and aspirations (Fredricks, Blumenfeld, & Paris, 2004).

By considering these aspects of inclusion and engagement, schools may be well placed to counteract the isolating tendencies of the digital world, strengthen relevance, and help students build the confidence, curiosity, and agency that support success beyond the classroom.
